China Rugs

Rugs woven in China before 1935 include Peking, Nichols & Fette. The Peking Rug was very influential in depicting Chinese symbols and designs used for hundreds of years. Normally Peking Rugs were made with all-over and centered designs. The most common colors used were ivory, navy or royal blue and yellow. Many modern Chinese rugs produced after 1975 are influenced by the antique Peking design.

The Nichols rugs were produced during the early 20th century through the early 1930's. Many of the Nichols designs were influenced by the Art Deco era. Interesting wool colors were blended to create a look and style that has remained very popular. The Fette Chinese is the counterpart to the Nichols and was woven in the early 20th century through the mid 1940's. Fette was known for their reproduction of the Peking design and European influence. President Nixon opened trade with China in the mid 1970's. Soon after the modern Chinese sculpture era began, and for approximately 20 years, the 90 and 120 line qualities in the Peking and Aubusson designs were among our best sellers. In the earlier 1990's, Tibetan rugs started being produced for the American market using modern and decorative designs and colors. They were an instant hit with American designers. Many traditional Oriental Rugs stores stopped carrying the Chinese sculptured rugs and today there is very minimal production.
