French Rugs

French rugs were made during the 17th - 19th centuries and are very elegant and formal. The Aubusson, a flat woven rug normally made with a medallion and a palate with pastel colors, and the Savonnerie, woven with a thicker pile and a palate with pastel colors, were both hand knotted rugs made if France. Any rug, or even fragment of a rug, made in 17th, 18th, or 19th Century France is extremely valuable. Since many of the rugs were woven for Aristocrats, they were made in larger sizes to accommodate the larger homes. Fragments or a slats of Antique French Aubusson rugs are used as wall hangings or as a window dressings.

China has continued to reproduce Aubusson and Savonnerie rugs and the newer versions of the Antique French Rugs are still very popular. To see Antique French rugs, you will probably have to visit a museum. If you plan to visit Nice, the Rothchild Museum has a wonderful collection of 18th and 19th century French rugs. And several years ago the Metropolitan Museum in New York City, had a fantastic collection of French Rugs and Furniture.
